Chapter 3: A Letter

Andrew had been living in the old mansion for a few weeks when he received a letter. Enclosed in the letter were, a gold watch and chain, and a handkerchief with the initials “C.D.P.” sewn into a corner.
He assumed they were his Father's because he had never seen them before.
The letter read,

                          My Dearest Andrew,
I hope you will accept these memories
as a treasure from your Parents.
I hope you are enjoying living with
                                  your new family.

                                               Love,
                                                    A  Friend

This put Andrew on edge. Who in the world was this “Friend”? How did they know his Parents? And why didn't they want him to know their name?
This was very strange indeed, and Andrew puzzled over it until May came into his room excited about something.
  “Guess what!” she exclaimed.
  “What?”
  “Guess!”
  “Umm...I don't know.”
“Mother and Father are taking us out!” May jumped up and down. “We're going to the country. I mean the country, country!”
“I thought we are in the country.”
“Oh never mind, just get ready!” she dashed down the hall, and downstairs.
Well, thought Andrew, I might as well do that.
The trip to the 'country, country' was really just a trip to the cabin that Amelia and George owned in the mountains.
They drove for 5 hours straight and soon pulled up a steep hill coming to a wide open clearing as  flat as a table. There in the middle of it stood a small cabin.
“This is it.” said Uncle George, parking the car. When they were out Amelia got to work putting away bags, and tidying up the cabin for their stay.
“I didn't know you had a cabin.” said Andrew in awe.
“We only visit it in the late fall. It's a once in a year tradition of ours.” explained Amelia.
The cabin was snug, and a fire crackled in the fireplace.
There were three rooms. The kitchen, the living room, and the bedroom. It was lightly furnished, and there was a queen-sized bed, and a bunk bed in the bedroom.
They took a walk through a trail in the forest, and returned before dark. Their dinner was fried chicken, and they ate it all because they were very hungry after their long walk.
When they were tucked into bed Andrew leaned over the top bunk, and whispered to May.
“What do you usually do when you're up here?”
“Oh, I just play outside and stuff.” she said. “But since you're here, we can have an adventure maybe.”
Andrew lay back, he was glad to be part of this family. He would like them after all!
